Albinism World AllianceThe Albinism World Alliance (AWA) is a network of albinism support groups in various countries. The AWA was founded in 1992 by representatives from Australia, Canada, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The AWA has grown to include albinism support groups in Germany, Mali, Malawi, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Norway, and South Africa, and other countries. The objectives for the organization are:
Printed materials about albinism, in English and Spanish, are available through the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation (NOAH) in the United States of America. Some of the organizations in other countries also have printed materials in their languages. The AWA provides information about albinism support groups in various countries. These support groups hold meetings, sponsor workshops and national conferences, publish newsletters, and conduct other networking activities. Groups in countries in Africa are also trying to help persons with albinism by providing sunscreens, eye glasses, and other optical aids. Some groups are also trying to help provide protective clothing and vocational assistance. Through television appearances, newspaper articles, information packets for libraries, and outreach to professional persons, AWA and its member organizations spread knowledge about albinism and work to improve attitudes about individuals who have the condition. For information about how your albinism related organization can become a member of the Albinism World Alliance, contact awa@albinism.org.
